It wasn’t too long ago when getting around to new places required either getting hand written directions from somebody or following . If you were so unlucky as to make a wrong turn, you might end up driving miles and miles before you figured out you were going the wrong way. Going on a lengthy road trip was quite challenging. Since GPS navigation devices have become popular, though, it has gotten much easier to get where we’re going.

That’s not to say that people don’t still use maps and directions. They can still be quite handy, and not everyone owns a GPS yet. But GPS devices are becoming far more prevalent today. Most smart phones on the market today come with some sort of GPS functionality. Depending on the software included, you can get detailed navigation, turn by turn audio driving instructions, and more. Some devices pick up traffic reports and can take traffic density into account when building a route. Perhaps most importantly, most of these things can be used hands free while driving without looking away from the road, which leads to safer driving.

One underappreciated benefit of using a GPS system is the money it can save you. It’s clear and understood that using a GPS navigation system can save you time and trouble when traveling. What is often overlooked is the gas savings you also receive by using it. With the turn by turn directions that most GPS devices use now, you can avoid having to pull over and look at a map. You don’t have to worry about driving past your turn, either. You can simply take the most direct route to your destination and waste no fuel in the process. If your GPS device can even keep up with traffic and direct you away from high congestion, you can avoid excessive idling and save even more gas. The device can easily pay for it self this way.
